My Hunches - What Is Happening In My Class?

As a teacher, my daily mission extends far beyond imparting knowledge; it's about nurturing a love for learning that resonates deeply with each student. When signing up for a CoL position in 2023, I was teaching years 0-2, my CoL intention was a focus on implementing NZ Histories through hands-on learning experiences tailored to their needs. However, the teaching landscape is forever changing, and I've since transitioned to teaching in the Year 5 & 6 syndicate.

At the start of the year, my colleague and I decided to group our students based on their abilities. I took on the lower literacy learners while my colleague worked with the higher-achieving ones. This decision stemmed from my experience in structured literacy over the past two years, where I focused on building foundational reading and writing skills. While there is still a need for differentiation within each group, we can now tailor our approach more effectively.

In this new role, I've embarked on a journey of constant reflection, driven by a desire to enhance my student’s engagement. I've noticed a lack of interest, motivation, and proficiency in various literacy areas within my group.  My observations and reflections have led to these wonderings/hunches…

Hunch 1: The Cultural Connection Conundrum

One hypothesis that has pulled at my teaching ethos is the potential impact of cultural connection on student engagement in literacy. Reflecting on my classroom dynamics, I've pondered: Could weaving authentic learning experiences rooted in New Zealand's diverse cultures enhance my students' motivation and involvement in literacy?

Hunch 2: Nurturing Self-Belief in Literacy

Another aspect close to my heart is nurturing self-belief in my students' literacy abilities. With the diverse mix of students in my classroom, I've sensed many moments of self-doubt clouding student’s potential. Could the incorporation of mixed-ability workshops, anchored in higher-level texts and focused learning goals, empower my students to believe in their literacy ability and skills?

Hunch 3: Bridging the Interest Gap in Reading Materials

As an educator, I've grappled with the challenge of sparking genuine interest in the reading materials provided, from RTRs to PMs and Phonics Plus. This led me to wonder: Would crafting multi-modal learning experiences, tailored to my students' interests ignite a newfound sense of engagement and autonomy?

Charting the Path Forward

With these hunches in hand, I begin a journey driven by my unwavering commitment to student growth. Through experimentation, collaboration, and reflection, I intend to explore, learn, and create ways to keep my students interested by crafting exciting learning opportunities that will inspire them to want to learn.
